Observing the political climate of the time, Kayla explores humanity's inherent need for autonomy in her digital painting "Freedom". She uses this piece to question humanity's connecting want for freedom and reflects on the lengths to which humans will go to in order to gain and protect autonomy over their lives and choices.
Kayla uses a cowboy as the main figure of the digital painting, utilizing the cowboy's image of being uninhibited to execute her message of freedom in addition to red and blue stained glass imagery to indicate the sacrifice and the hope inspired by humans who endured violence for the sake of liberty. She also directly references her Louisiana Creole heritage by including Fleur de lis to directly reference the symbol being branded onto slaves in Louisiana who revolted or ran away during chattel slavery to emphasize the brutality we suffer as we fight for autonomy.
Through color, symbolism, and western iconography, Kayla creates a reminder that the brutal fight for freedom is a necessary one, and the yearn for liberty is a connecting human trait.
